Elk season 2009????....2010

My elk hunt starts on Friday, January 1st, 2010. But don't be confused, it is a 2009 hunt. I had to have a 2009 license to apply for the tag, but now I have to have a 2010 license to actually hunt the elk. So basically I have to pay for 2 licenses for 1 hunt! But I am not going to complain. As long as I can find another group of gawkers such as this one,

sometime after the 1st and before the 31st. If all goes according to plan, which it never does or ever will, I will have a couple hundred pounds of elk meat in the freezer before the end of the month of January. Now if the darn gawkers will cooperate and the runners keep running and stay away from their slower moving cousins, then it will be a good successful hunting season and I will finally get to blog about actually filling a tag! That could be fun. We'll see what happens. Stay tuned.

1st annual, after Christmas, Christmas Tree "Lighting" Ceremony

Here is another Jayne family tradition. Okay, like crab for Christmas eve dinner, we only started this one last year, but it is going to be an annual event. Technically this is the first year because last years attempt was a bust. We watered the tree too much while we had it up for Christmas, and it would not light up. :(
So this year we made sure it would light up. We did not ever water it at all! It was nice and crispy and ready for this years "After Christmas, Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony."
Here is our dedecorated tree. Just waiting to be "lit" up.

Here was the first attempt to light the tree this year. It kind of fizzled. If it were not for my years of firefighting and burning slash, I may have been worried that it would not light up again this year.

However, I had plenty of juice to light it up this year. Here is attempt number 2 and as you can see. It was a success.

Trees burn well and burn fast when they have not been watered. This is a good example of why you are supposed to water your tree while it is in your house.

A couple seconds later.

It only took about 30 seconds to get to this point. This brought back a lot of fond memories of my past forest fire fighting days.

It took less than 2 minutes to get to here. The neighbor that was watching said, "That was almost better than the 4th of July."

All good things must come to an end though, and after just a couple minutes it was over. There is a lot less tree to have to dispose of now! That was fun and entertaining. It gives me another reason to look forward next Christmas season.
Disclaimer: DO NOT attempt if you are clumsy, accident prone, fear fire or lack common sense.
No buildings, people, animals or property were harmed or in anyway damaged in this ceremony. This would not be wise to attempt indoors or on a dry lawn.(use common sense)
I hope everyone got as much amusement out of this as I did and I wish you all a happy and safe end to 2009 and start to 2010.

Busy Christmas Day

For the past several years, at least as long as we have had kids, our Christmas day routine has been to have our immediate family Christmas at home first thing in the morning. Then, late morning we go to Grandmas house for Christmas with Brooke's side of the family. Then sometime in the next 2 months, go over to Paisley for Christmas with my parents, and then find some time to meet with my sister and her family for Christmas a 4th time. These all usually take place days or weeks apart and at different locations each time, so there is only 1 cleanup required at our house.

Well, this year we got to cram all 4 Christmas meetings into the same day, all in our house. This was a busy day with a lot of eating and kid present opening. First, we did our normal immediate family thing as soon as we got up. But it also included my Mom and brother, who came over here from Paisley yesterday. Then at about 10:30 am, Brooke's mom and sister and her sisters family came over. We had a great time watching kids open gifts, visiting and eating. Next, at about 1:30 pm, my sister and her family made the trip up from Eugene. Which brought another round of gift opening, eating and visiting. Fun was had by all and no one went away hungry. Once the bulk of visitors left, we settled in to figure out what new things were in our home and what to do with all the stuff. We got to enjoy playing some new games with the kids and playing with our kids new toys! At least until the kids got loud enough asking if they could play with them too, that we had to share.

Now that it is all done, you would think, we still only have to clean up once, right. Not really. We had to clean up between each group of visitors and now that they are all gone we have to clean up the food and kitchen stuff that is about 4 times as big as normal.
I guess I better stop bloggin and get to work.

Christmas Eve Dinner with the Jaynes

When I was growing up, the Jayne family tradition for Christmas Eve dinner was Oyster Stew. It was something I did not particularly care for. Okay, I despise Oyster Stew. I did not look forward to dinner on an otherwise wonderful time of year. I did everything I could to get out of having to eat it, but always was forced to choke some down every year. Once I was old enough to realize I would not live with my parents forever, I told myself that this tradition was ending with me. I have not eaten Oyster stew in a very long time and am sure I never will. But now that we have a family, we decided a while ago that we needed a tradition of our own for Christmas Eve dinner. We have tried several things over the years, but nothing had stuck. Until last year. On Christmas Eve 2008, we had Dungeness crab and shrimp. I only had the crab, but the girls all had shrimp also. We decided that was now our tradition. So here in 2009, we had the 2nd annual Christmas Eve Crab and Shrimp feed. The one improvement this year was a result of our trip to Seattle in November and eating at The Crab Pot. I cut some Oak cutting boards and built some little wood mallets for breaking the crab just like we used at the Crab Pot and now we have our Jayne family Christmas Eve dinner tradition with its very own hand made utensils.
Here is the table just before serving the crab.
Here is a close up of the cutting boards and mallets.
Here is the shrimp and the utensils.
Now just like at the Crab Pot, we just dumped all the crab and potatoes out on the table and had at it.
Doesn't it look yummy? I am going to like this new Christmas Eve dinner tradition.
No more Oyster stew!

Frozen Falls

These pics speak for themselves.
This is what McDowell Creek falls looks like after a week of below freezing weather. There are 2 trickles of water still flowing down the falls. One on each side of the falls. The center has no flowing water at all, just ice.
I took the pictures on December 10, 2009.

Fake deer or big fakers?

While driving through the woods the other day with a co-worker, we spotted this deer standing in the plantation about 200 yards from us. So, like we always do, we stopped to gawk at it and see if it had the gawker genes or runner genes in its blood. Since it is not hunting season, it is hard to tell because gawkers still just gawk and runners, knowing we cannot shoot at them legally, just stand there and pretend to be gawkers for us. Just as expected the deer just stood there and gawked. We got out the camera with the big zoom lens and the binoculars so we could gawk back. After several minutes of a world class stare off, we started to realize that this deer had not blinked, twitched, chewed, ate grass, turned its head, fipped its tail or any other thing that both gawker and runner deer are well known to regularly do. This deer did not move.
We began to wonder if this was one of those fake deer that game officers set out to catch those hunters that are so frustrated by all the runners running off out of thier sites before they can get an acurate shot off, that they start straying from the rules and guidelines for hunters set up by the agency that attempts to manage wild animal populations and start throwing lead in the direction of anything that looks like a deer, anytime of day, or night or from inside their vehicle or from a road.(there are laws about when, where and how to shoot at wild animals.) About this time, we notice a second deer doing the same thing. So we snap some pics and watch both of these deer for what seemed like an eternity, and niether one of them showed any sign that they were actually real deer. Finally, we came to the conclusion that these were in fact fake deer. There seems to be no way that even the world champion gawker deer could stand this still for this long and not at least need to scratch itself where one of its thousands of fleas and ticks is biting at it. The only thing we could do now was to walk out and get a close up picture of these two stuffed decoys.
So after watching them intently for over 10 minutes without any sign of life, I shut the truck off, we got out and started walking toward the fake herbivores. But to our supprise, once we hiked about 150 feet towards them, they both came to life and ran up and over the hill along with a third deer that had been hiding in the brush.

Then it came to me. These two gawkers were testing their gawkabilities against each other. The third one was judging to see who flinched first. Kind of a gawker deer world championships right here in our own back yard! I'm sure they got bonus points for convincing the 2 legged creatures in the noisy 4 wheel beast that they were not real. Now all we have to do is hope they continue this competition and forget about when the next hunting season starts. We just need to keep the ones with runner genes from infiltrating the area. So all the discouraged hunters out there have something to look forward to for next year. We have world champion gawker deer right here waiting to hold a pose for us come next October!

Things that I am thankful for from A to Z.

Thanksgiving is tomorrow. So I started thinking about all the things that I am thankful for. Then I heard this idea on the radio. Write down something that you are thankful for beginning with each letter of the alphabet. Some of the letters are harder than others. Here is my list.

A - Ability to work - So I am able to make a living and support my family.

B - Blessings from God - We are constantly blessed with much more than we deserve.

C - Creation - All of creation is so beautiful and wonderful to explore.

D - Daughters - They are so fun to have around.

E - Emma - My first born child and a great joy to watch grow and mature.

F - Free country that we live in. - Our great country that has provided up a place to live freely and prosper. We are greatly blessed with the freedoms we have in this country and that is a big part of the Thanksgiving holiday.

G - God the father - The reason we are here and the reason we are so blessed

H - Home - A warm place to live and enjoy life

I - Internet - Our only source of news and info since we do not have cable or get a newspaper.

J - Jesus my savior - Giving me eternal life.

K - Knowledge - Not that I have a lot, but I am thankful for what I have learned and the knowledge I have gained throughout my life.

L - Leah - Our newest bundle of joy.

M - Mom - For being my mom and raising me in the best way she knew how.

N - No cable TV - Canceled it after college football last January with the intention of getting it again for this football season, but it was so nice not having the distraction, that we decided not to get it again. We just have to go to someone else's house to watch the beavs play.

O - Outdoors - Its just way better than indoors, as long as it is out in the woods, not it town.

P - Physical Health - I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

Q - Questions - Especially ones posed by any one of little girls in our house, which either make you think, or make you laugh and wonder what their little brains are thinking.

R - Riah - She loves to snuggle up with me to watch movies together (gotta love Vegitales). She is kinda cute too, especially the freckles.

S - Sarah - Our 3rd daughter and constant source of amazement and entertainment.

T - Trials from God - Helps me grow and gain more knowledge and understanding.

U - Understanding - So we know why things are the way they are. Not that I have a lot of this either.

V - Vacation - A time of relaxing and doing fun things with the family.

W - Wonderful Wife - Loves me, takes care of me, the kids, the house, and homeschooling.

X - XXL - Clothes that fit are kinda important, right.

Y - Yesterday - Experiences had, lessons learned. All part of building that knowledge and understanding.

Z - Zion National Park - Looks like a fun outdoorsy place to go on vacation sometime.

Deer hunting 2009

Well, deer season is over for 2009. Here is a picture of what I was able to get this year.

As you can see, I did not get anything again this year. The only thing that makes this season better than last season, ( see last years post) was that, while I did not get to see a legal deer during the season, I did not put out any effort this year. I put out so little effort that if I had got a deer I would have almost felt bad about it, because I did not earn it! I did get to see some deer this year and saw some elk while taking a friend elk hunting. I did see 1 legal buck that I could have shot, but it was elk season and I was on private property. Then I did see 1 doe that wanted to get shot, but I was on the wrong side of hiway 20 for my tag, so I let her live. I am sure someone else has probably shot her by now unless she was really not a gawker and was actually a runner that knew I did not have a tag. In that case she would be able to tell if other hunters will shoot at her with or without a tag and won't stand there pretending to be a gawker.
I still have hope for meat in the freezer this winter though. I have an elk tag for January, so I will hopefully get one in the freezer. I only need 1 gawker to stop and gawk at me once the season starts, so stay tuned.

Hunting season 2009!!!

Deer hunting season for 2009 is starting this weekend. I was not really all that excited about it after last season.(see post from last year) But, there is nothing like seeing a bunch of bucks standing around asking you to shoot them to get the old buck fever juices flowing and make you forget all of last seasons woes. So now I am back in the killing mode. Have gun, tag, bullets and am ready to go throw some lead around and put some meat in the freezer. There is no way I can have 2 seasons in a row as bad as last year, right? So, after a trip to visit mom in Paisley last weekend, and seeing this
I am ready to go out and set myself up for more disappointment and discouragement. It cannot be any worse than last year though. If I just at least see a live animal running off in the distance, it will be an improvement over last year. The pictures are fuzzy because I was drooling over the deer all over my camera.(ok not really, I was taking the pics through the screen door of my moms house.)
Granted these deer are in Paisley, and I will be hunting in the cascades by Sweet Home. It still boosted my confidence that there will be meat in the freezer come November. It is amazing how seeing nice bucks this close to hunting season makes your bad memories go away. Check in later to see if I am successful at finding some more gawkers standing around wanting me to shoot at them.

The Tornado

Sarah, over the last couple months, has earned herself a new nickname. She is now affectionately known as "The Tornado." She is all over the place and never slows down. Things are usually knocked off the wall or table or wherever, as she blows by. She could not even sit still long enough to get a clear picture the other day.

Here Riah is about to get hit by with the full force of "The Tornado." We have had her rated as a catagory F3 tornado, so it may build into a stronger one yet.

Salsa

We are making our yearly ration of salsa. We ran out way too soon last year, so we decided to make a bigger batch. We should end up with 25-30 quarts!! Here is some of the tomatoes and serrano peppers that we are using from our garden. But, we needed to get more stuff from the store and Brooke found some free tomatoes somewhere.(70 # worth!!)

Here is most of the ingredients. 70 #'s tomatos(various varieties), 40 cups diced green peppers, 32 cups diced onions, 10 various varieties of hot peppers(serrano, habenaro, pablano, banana, etc.), and a few spices to finish it off.

We are going to make 2-3 pints of "special" salsa as well. This little guy is one of the key components of that mix! Do you like your salsa extra spicy?

Jayne Family Hospital Ward

Here is how the girls spent about 5 days last week while they were sick. We got an inflatable air matress and put it in the living room. They all spent the week watching movies and resting on the air matresses or the couch. Great fun. In this pic they are watching a Vegitales movie called, "Sheerluck Holmes and the golden ruler." Now that they are pretty much all well again, we had to bring them back to reality and shut the TV off. It was fun for them while it lasted.

Photography

I have been playing with my camera again and I have learned a few new things from a book I got recently. Here is the latest pics I took out at McDowell creek falls.

The sun was just starting to rise when I took these pics. I used my tripod and had a shutter speed of up to 8 seconds.

Summer vacation cottage?

Need a nice summer vacation home? I have found the place for you. Nestled up in the Cascade Mountains at a place called Wolf Lake. Here is the view from the front door of this cozy little cabin in the woods that is just waiting for your arrival. That is Wolf lake! In the winter there is actually a lake, but in the summer, it is this beautiful High mountain meadow. (there is a small pond like thing out in the middle if you still would like to have a lake.)

What is the best part of a wilderness vacation? I'm glad you asked. Solitude. You do not want to be disturbed by all the pesky tourist and touristy things to do, right. Well, this cabin is for you. Once you get up here and get settled in, you won't see another soul. Even if someone comes by, chances are, they would not see you or your cabin, as it is tucked up into the trees and blends in nicely with its surroundings. Here is the front door to your new paradise, looking at it from the shores of Wolf lake.

The builder was also thinking about how to get out in case of emergency. What if the door is blocked by fire? Well, ok, if the door is on fire, the whole thing probably is! But, if you woke up from a nice afternoon nap and there was a bear standing in your front door looking for your garbage can, you can escape out the second exit to the east. Here is a pic of the east side of your hidden hide away. It is also helpful for when Wolf lake might get too full in the rainy season and you don't want to get your new expensive hiking boots dirty in the mud out the front door.

Next in the virtual tour of your new wilderness paradise, is shows the view from inside looking out the front door. As you can see, you are right there on the shore of Wolf Lake. You can't find a better location.

One more view of the outside to show the builders conscientious effort to build a "green" building. As you can see from this picture, it is built to blend into the environment and even goes so far as using natural elements as part of the structure. Notice the large old growth log on the ground acting as part of the foundation of the cabin and the live tree that is the main vertical support structure for the building. All elements that help it blend into the natural surroundings.

Now for the interior of this cozy cottage. Furniture is included. The next pic show the sleeping area and the custom built wilderness recliner. Try to find that at Ikea!! Notice the efficient use of resources in that the bed is the old log that is also part of the foundation, and if the bed is not soft enough, there is ample supply of padding just outside the door so you can fluff it up the way you want. I recommend moss, but there is also plenty of ferns and grass as well.

Okay. So I know you are thinking, "that's kinda small." Of course it is, what part of "cozy" did you not understand? But, before the claustrophobia sets in completely and you change your mind prematurely, it has high vaulted ceilings, which make it see very roomy and airy. (Well maybe its the wind blowing throught the gaps in the walls making it feel "airy", but we just call that wilderness air conditioning.)

Next we have the Dining/Kitchen area. It comes complete with the basic utensils, dishes, and a frying pan. It also has a fully unstocked pantry there on the wall above the kitchen table/counter top. I know, I know, you want to know about the running water, right? What do you need that for, when Wolf lake is 2 steps out the front door. This will give you the old frontier days feel that you have been longing for since being stuck in traffic on the way home from work everyday. It takes you back to a time before cars, cell phones, and computers. Speaking of computers, don't bother bringing your laptop, there is no internet out here and very sketchy cell phone service, if any. This is a real wilderness experience cabin.

That concludes the virtual tour of the cozy little wolf lake wilderness frontier days experience vacation cabin on the lake. You are probably now wondering, "What about a bathroom?" This is the wilderness remember. Just step out the front door, and pick a bathroom. There are hundreds of them. They are also known as "trees." I told you this is a wilderness cabin. (just be sure not to use the one right by the door. That could get messy.)

So if you are interested in staying in this wilderness wonderland, just call for reservations, and have your credit card handy. Once payment is recieved, you will recieve an email with the location and how to get the keys. Just call - 1-888-UR2GULLIBLEIFUACTUALLYTRY2 CALLTHISNUMBER and you will be on your way to communing with nature in a way you never before dreamed.

Some of our harvests

With our garden this year, we finally found something that we can grow well. Cherry tomatoes seem to love the spot they were planted in and we have had a huge supply of them.
Here are a couple of pics of some of the little guys we got this year.

They are pretty good tomatoes too. Unfortunately, Riah and I are the only ones in the house who like tomatoes. So we are having a hard time keeping the inventory down!

We also found that Roma tomatoes like our garden as well. Here are a couple of them. They like to hide inside the plant so they are hard to see, but once they turn red, we realize how many there are.
