As Fathers day comes around this year it brings great joy to me to see my own children, that God has blessed me with, want to do things for me, but at the same time it is sad knowing that this is the first Fathers day since my dad passed away. It was only a little over a month ago, that I got that call. We did not get to do much for Mothers day this year because he passed away early on Mothers day. We never really did much on Fathers day, just send cards and talk on the phone, but now that is not even possible. He was not a perfect father, but who is other than God? I know I am far from perfect as a father. My dad was a very quiet man, and rarely showed much emotion about anything. Both traits that unfortunately he passed on to me. This just shows me how much our parents example influences how we behave and think once we are grown no matter what we thought of them while we were growing up. How many of us with children now ever stop and think, oh my, that is something my mom or dad would say or do that I hated growing up, and now I am doing the exact same thing without even thinking about it.
Dad and I never had any real deep discussions about anything but he still passed on his ideas and beliefs through his actions and daily life. He did not often tell me that he loved me or that he was proud of me directly, but I have always known that he did love me and was proud of me just by the way he treated me once I became an adult and from family members who have since told me that he talked to them about me a lot. I will miss my dad, but I must go on with life remembering the good things he taught me, and learning from and not repeating the mistakes that he made. The one main lesson I have learned from going through my dads death, is do not wait to tell the ones you love the important things that you know you should tell them. Even the difficult topics. You never know when you will lose them and no longer have that chance. My dads memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew him and loved him and I will look to my heavenly father for the wisdom and strength to be the father that I know he wanted to be.
